Family: Cohabitation

Cohabitation

Many couples set up home together and have children, but do not marry. At the moment (although there are proposed changes) under English law there are no separate provisions or laws relating to co-habiting couples, however long they have lived together. Problems may develop in relation to property and children when the relationship ends and we can advise on what rights each partner has in relation to property and their rights and responsibilities in relation to any children.

To avoid any problems in the future co-habiting couples can enter into a co-habitation agreement which sets out their wishes and arrangements.

Civil Partnership

Since the Civil Partnership Act came into force at the end of 2005, same sex couples who have registered their partnership have the same rights as married couples. We can advise on dissolution of partnerships and financial matters.
